Tips for Women Who Want to Have Twins

Tips for Women Who Want to Have Twins

Kids are so adorable.  Having two or more of them at the same time optimizes adorability to the max.  For women who are looking to become pregnant with more than one child at a time, it’s comforting to know that luck doesn’t necessarily determine the outcome of one’s pregnancy.  In fact, there are more than a few safety and health tips that a woman can follow to increase her chances of conceiving more than one child at the same time.

Being older helps

First of all, it’s important to note that as a woman gets older, her chances of conceiving more than one child at a time increases.  Researchers and colleagues from the Vrije University Medical Centre “found that older women have higher levels of a hormone called FSH, prompting greater likelihood of having fraternal twins.”

Family history plays a part

For those who have a family history of twins, there’s a greater chance that twins will be conceived.  This doesn’t mean that a person has to have a parent who is a twin, but having family members — aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters — who have twins will increase the odds of being able to conceive more than one child at the same time.  It is imperative to note that a woman who is married to a man who has past twin-family history is of no importance.  Instead, the twin-history needs to be derived from her family’s past history.

Folic acid supplements can help

For those who are looking for a safe way to increase their odds of having twins, folic acid supplements can be of tremendous value.  An Australian study concluded that “women who take folic acid [supplements] before they got pregnant were [40%] more likely to conceive twins.” Even for women who aren’t interested in having twins, this supplement is of immense value because it can help deter neural tube defects.

Weight and height are essential factors

An issue found in Obstetrics & Gynecology, dated back in March of 2005, stated women who are overweight, as well as those who are tall, had a greater opportunity at having twins.

Dairy from cows treated with growth hormone may influence the chance of having twins

A physician, Dr. Gary Steinman, employed at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, recently released findings that “women who eat dairy are five times more likely to conceive twins than women who don’t.”  This study included women who eat a regular diet, women who followed a vegan diet, and women who followed a vegan diet but also consumed dairy products.  It is believed that the women who consumed dairy products coming from growth hormone treated cows were the most likely to conceive twins.

The Takeaway

If you’re interested in finding ways to increase your odds of having twins, it’s crucial that you don’t follow any tips that negatively affect your health.  For instance, just because overweight women are believed to have a higher chance of having twins, this doesn’t mean you should follow a diet that causes extreme weight gain.  A healthy diet combined with safe sex practices are your best bet at having a healthy pregnancy, which should be your ultimate goal.
