Most people have been told all of their lives that men with high levels of testosterone tend to have stronger sexual desires.  But contrary as it may sound, it has been found that testosterone doesn’t directly influence a man’s sex drive.

For women, high levels of this hormone can actually lead them to endure a lowered sex drive.  And according to LiveScience, the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior released findings stating that women who have high levels of testosterone have a “greater interest in masturbation.”  A study researcher told LiveScience, “The reason may be that solitary desire, which leads to masturbation, is different than the kind of desire that leads people to proposition a partner.”

Identifying the role that testosterone plays within a woman’s sex life

To determine the role that testosterone plays on a woman (from a sexual standpoint), 196 volunteers were asked to answer questions.  105 of them were men, 91 were women.  The questions that they answered related directly to their frequency of having sex and masturbating as well as their desire to have sex and masturbate.

Testosterone and cortisol levels of each participant were measured via saliva samples.  Low-testosterone volunteers were then compared to those with high levels.  It was found that in men, their levels of testosterone in no way influenced how much they thought about sex or masturbation.

In the women, though, high levels of testosterone were associated with a decreased desire to have sex with a partner, and an increased desire to masturbate.

This leads us to a two-way street; what should a woman with high or low levels of testosterone do?

If a woman visits a doctor and discovers she has high levels of testosterone, and she is looking for a way to increase her desire to have sex with a partner, it might be advantageous for her to lower her testosterone.  On the other hand, if she has low levels of the hormone and she wants to increase her desire to masturbate, she will want to increase her levels.

Fortunately, there are several remedies that can be implemented to either reduce or increase testosterone in women.

To Decrease Testosterone Levels

  • Drink herbal teas
  • Acupuncture treatment for high testosterone
  • Take Diindolylmethane, a natural supplement that has been proven to lower testosterone

To Increase Testosterone Levels

  • Consume more protein
  • Take ginseng, a natural supplement available in tea, powder or pill form
  • Limit your intake of alcohol
