Sex and Menopause: It’s Not All Downhill

Sex and Menopause: It’s Not All DownhillAs a woman gets older, her sex drive may decrease, however, this is not always the case. For some women, a lowered sex drive doesn’t actually take place until menopause kicks in. It should be noted that menopause affects each woman differently, with each experiencing different side effects.  Some women report that going through menopause increases their sex drive because they no longer have to worry about getting pregnant.

Symptoms of Menopause
As a woman enters into menopause, she may or may not experience lowered estrogen levels. If she does, this can directly influence her desire to engage in sexual activities. Another symptom of menopause is vaginal dryness, which can have a strong impact on a woman’s ability to enjoy intercourse.  Furthermore, because menopause can lead to mood swings, as well as difficulty sleeping, these side effects often interfere with a woman’s sex drive.

Sex during and after menopause
Many women don’t know the facts about having sex during and after menopause. Some of them feel that having sex may not be the best idea. But the truth is, it’s completely okay to have sex during menopause. Many women are even more likely to have more enjoyable sex once menopause sets in. Best of all, women who have went through menopause are more likely to enjoy multiple orgasms — something they have probably never basked in before.

Are there treatment options for women who endure negative sexual side effects of menopause?
Absolutely! For those who endure lowered estrogen levels, there are many treatment remedies available, including pills, gels, patches, sprays and more.  Hormone therapy does come with risks, so for women who don’t suffer from negative menopause symptoms, it’s usually best to avoid hormone therapy regimens. As far as vaginal dryness, there are three primary ways to treat this condition — vaginal estrogen ring, vaginal estrogen tablet, and vaginal estrogen cream.
